Most lists of “healthy snacks for weight loss” are just lists. This guide starts from a simpler question: what makes a snack a good part of an eating pattern, and how do you plan snacks so they fit your day? It uses public health guidance for the food side and says plainly where Forever’s products fit and where they do not.
What the CDC’s eating guidance means for snacks
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes a healthy eating plan as one that emphasizes vegetables, fruits, protein foods, dairy without added sugars, healthy fats and whole grains, is low in added sugars, sodium, saturated fats and trans fats, and stays within your daily calorie needs. Snacks are part of that pattern, so the same filters apply:
- Vegetables and fruit — fresh, frozen or canned; the CDC suggests choosing canned fruit packed in water or its own juice, and notes that dried and canned fruit may contain added sugars.
- Protein foods — seafood, meats, poultry, eggs, beans and peas, soy products, nuts and seeds.
- Dairy without added sugars — the CDC suggests regular or Greek-style yogurt without added sugars.
- Whole grains — for example whole-grain bread or oats.
Snack building blocks
| Start with | Add | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit | A protein food | Apple slices with peanut butter |
| Vegetables | A protein food or healthy fat | Carrot sticks with hummus |
| Yogurt without added sugars | Fruit or nuts | Greek yogurt with berries |
| Whole-grain bread | A protein food | Whole-grain toast with egg |
| Nuts or seeds | A piece of fruit | A small handful of almonds and a pear |
Pairing a snack with protein or fiber is a common approach, and the examples above are ideas, not a program. Portion size and your daily calorie needs matter as much as the food itself.
Drinks count too
The CDC notes that water has no calories and that replacing sugary drinks with plain water can help reduce calorie intake. It lists regular sodas, fruit drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and sweetened coffee and tea as sugary drinks with little nutritional value. Plain coffee or tea, sparkling water and unsweetened fortified milk alternatives are among its other options.
Plan ahead
- Have healthy options on hand — the CDC suggests keeping fruits and vegetables ready to grab.
- Plan meals ahead — it also recommends planning, including for family treats.
- Bring snacks to share — at work, the CDC suggests bringing healthier snacks.
